About Our Club
Kenai Schutzhund Club

History of Our Club

The Kenai Schutzhund Club was established in Kenai, Alaska in 1995.  It was founded by John Fielden, and originally consisted of three dog/handler teams.  In 1997, the club held a successful seminar with Dean Calderon and 26 dog/handler teams from around the state of Alaska and Canada participated.    In August 1998, just barely meeting the minimum requirements, the club held its first trial with Bill Fields judging.  In 1999, the club moved to Anchorage and consisted of eight members - six of which are still active today: Jim Sullivan (Vice-President 1999-2000), Tom (President 1999-2000) & Valerie Brollini, Kelly Blackston (Secretary 1999-Present), Roy Cappodona, and Julia Grimes (Sergeant at Arms 1999-2001).  We currently train in Anchorage at Kincaid Park.  For more information, click here.

Since 1998, the club membership has grown to over 15 members.  Under the careful guidance of our Training Director, Roman Bratslavsky, our club has enjoyed quite a few successful trials, with an average success rate of 80%.  In fact, in 2001 the club had two members that qualified for and competed in the Schutzhund USA National Trial held in Boston, MA.  This was the first time anyone from Alaska had ever competed at that level.

In addition to our trials, we have had the opportunity to learn from seminars presented by Jim Elder and Mark and Ann Marie Chaffin.  We hope to continue bringing such knowledgeable people to Alaska for trials and seminars for years to come.
